The
project resulted from a renewal of the mission statement of
the church and a review of its facilities in light of its
proposed new and enhanced ministries. Barrier free access,
improved meeting spaces and completed upgraded facilities
for Christian education and the wintertime weekly 'Out of
the Cold' ministry were building issues identified as needing
attention.
The
first phase of the project consisted of a mid-week entrance
addition providing access to hydraulic elevator and basement
ramps. Through these, barrier free access was provided to
six of seven levels in the building. The work also included
extensive renovations and alterations to the three floors
of the Christian Education Building, further improving access
throughout the building and providing the improved meeting
and Christian education spaces. Some exterior restoration
and site improvements completed the Phase 1 work. The second
phase was more modest and included renovations to offices
and the main fellowship hall and its kitchen. David Paine
worked on the design and carried out the production of the
construction documents and site review during construction.
The
project was tendered with both phases priced in the first
year. The second phase was carried out as a negotiated contract
based on the first year tender price. Phase 1 was completed
in 1998 and the second phase of work was completed in 1999.
