BB&R
Architect carried out an analysis of responses to our questionnaire
to determine the core issues that needed to be resolved in
a much-needed renovation. The issues were the provision of
barrier free access into and throughout the building and upgrading
the facilities generally dating from the mid-1950's. The project
involved gutting the auditorium area of the building and demolishing
its under-utilized stage area on the main floor and extensive
redecoration and some renovation in both the basement and
the second floor areas.
Barrier free access was provided at both the main worship
space entry via a ramp to a side narthex entry and at a mid-week
entry with a lift to the main floor and basement levels. Circulation
throughout the ground floor was reworked to enable uninterrupted
use of the various meeting spaces. A stair lift enabled barrier
free access from the worship level to the fellowship level.
The church office was re-organised to accommodate readily
accessible storage. The church nursery space was relocated
from a hard-to-find mid-basement level to the former stage
area. An undersized servery space off the original auditorium
was enlarged and renovated to provide the main service space
for church functions. The original large kitchen in the basement
off the gymnasium/ dinner hall was updated with existing cabinetry
refurbished.
The project was tendered and was completed in 2000 in time
for the congregation to celebrate its 70th anniversary.
