The
historic church was suffering from many of the problems that
such churches face: inadequate facilities, structural deficiencies
and a poor connection with its parking. The addition was designed
to enhance the existing building while providing updated facilities.
The exterior was designed with brick and a fieldstone plinth
to match the existing. Historic stained glass windows that
were removed as a result of the connections to the existing
building were reused in significant spaces. The lower floor
of the addition consisted of support spaces for the church,
washrooms and a new kitchen, as well as a class/ choir room.
With these functions having been relocated from the original
basement, the church hall was enlarged and completely refurbished.
The main floor of the addition consisted of offices and a
lounge/ meeting room. The addition braced one wall of the
existing church that had bulged over time. The opposite wall
was braced in a concealed manor and the roof structure reinforced
to prevent further outward movement. The nave and chancel
were refurbished. The historic windows adjacent the addition
were sky lighted along the length of the new corridor. Stairs
and a path were provided connecting the addition entry to
the street and neighbouring parking lot. The late Murray Ross
was the architect for the preliminary design. David Paine
developed the design and produced the construction documents
under the direction of William Menzel. The project was tendered
and constructed in 1997.
