House in Shanty Bay was conceived by a group of parishioners
at St. Thomas Anglican Church. They recognized the need for
affordable supportive housing for local seniors so that they
could continue to live within the local community with all
its amenities and personal connections. The group formed the
Abbeyfield Housing Society of Shanty Bay and operates under
the principals of Abbeyfield International, a non-profit organization.
The project provides the necessary housing in a setting where
seniors can live as a large "family": each has his
or her individual bed/ sitting room with en suite bathroom;
living, dining and activity spaces are communal, just as in
a family home. A live-in house manager provides meals and
facilitates activities.
The
construction was carried out by a well-respected local builder.
It was completed in 2002.
