INTRODUCTION
This
record is an expansion to one prepared by Doug Brown at the time
of the centenary of the architectural practice Brown Beck &
Ross Architects. The document was entitled "J. Francis Brown
Architect - Brown Beck & Ross Architects, 1891-1991: A Record
of Practice." Doug Brown was the third generation to follow
in his grandfather's footsteps when leading the firm into its
centenary. This document is prepared to both flush out some details
of the tenth decade, ending the centenary, and provide a continuity
to the history of what is arguably Canada's longest serving, continuous
architectural practice. Some editorial work has been carried out
on the original document. Doug Brown wrote:
"It
would appear to be a common failing that we develop an interest
about our roots after the documentation has disappeared and the
principals with information stored in their memories are no longer
available. Fortunately, our predecessors were record savers and
so both the drawing files and the financial records are available
from 1891 to the present and provide us with a rich mine of information.
This record is an attempt to distil this information, along with
some personal remembrances, into a form that may be of interest
not only to family, professional successors, but also to a wider
community."
