First
Christian Reformed Church, Toronto
This
addition and resultant alterations to First Christian Reformed
create a dramatically friendlier entry. The original entry
was by way of a daunting and uninviting set of exterior stairs.
Barrier free access to the worship space and office facilities
was by way of a long ramp up the side of the building to its
rear door.
Design
work began originally in 1988 under Brown Beck & Ross
Architects. A more modest proposal was pursued in 2000. The
congregation was interested in creating a more community friendly
church building. This proposal resolves both the entry and
barrier free access issues, as well as creating a more welcoming
office situation. The worship space also acts as a community
meeting space with an adjacent kitchen and larger gathering
area. Renovations in the basement improved the washrooms,
including a new barrier free accessible washroom, and enlarged
the nursery, bringing its access closer to the main church
entry.
The
project was tendered. It was completed in 2003.
